Statement on Court Ruling Regarding I-940
The Washington Stare Fraternal Order of Police is disappointed in the recent ruling by a Thurston County Judge invalidating the passage of House Bill 3003 and pushing Initiative 940 to the ballot. We hold steadfast that I-940 is bad for our communities and bad for public safety.
During the last Legislative session, the groups once polarized against each other over this issue came to common ground. De-Escalate Washington, WASPC, WACOPS and The FOP sat at the table together to negotiate an alternative that addresses the issues and hand, while preserving public safety. Sending I 940 to the ballot would deepen the divide between the community and law enforcement we have worked so hard to overcome through working together on HB 3003.
The recent challenge and ruling by the Court has not changed our position; The Washington State FOP supports HB 3003 as passed. The passage of I-940 will be a detriment to the safety and security of communities across Washington State. We are confident that the collaborative effort of HB 3003 will prevail.
