WAFOP Letter to End Partial Government Shutdown
Updated On: Jan 11, 2019

On behalf of the Washington State Fraternal Order of Police, we urge you to find a compromise and immediately end the partial government shutdown. As a law enforcement association, we work to ensure our communities are safe.  We believe in good policy that supports public safety and encourage you to develop bi-partisan, long-term legislation that provides comprehensive border security.

Federal government employees as well as those in ancillary companies and organizations are deeply impacted by the partial government shutdown.  The uncertainty of the situation is causing thousands of Washington citizens, including some law enforcement officers financial stress as they are denied their paycheck.  Over 1,000 federal workers in our state have filed for unemployment benefits and countless others are utilizing food banks and other services dedicated to those with income instability.  The ripple effect of what this partial shutdown does to our communities most vulnerable and those driven to serve them is devastating.

As we enter the 21stday since the lapse in appropriations, it is imperative that you re- open the government now. A federal government shutdown should not be a pawn to be used in disagreements.  The members of the Washington State FOP are asking the federal government to open the doors of closed agencies while a bipartisan compromise that ensures public safety is developed.

As a northern border state we stand at the ready to assist you in engaging in discussions regarding the complexity of our nation’s border safety and what it means to our state’s law enforcement officers. Please feel welcome to utilize the insight and expertise of our association's trained professionals.
