SCAM – Initiative supporters use fake advertising to gather signatures

082917 - Olympia, Washington – Across the state, efforts for an initiative to change current use of force statutes is in full swing. Initiative 940 will make it easier to prosecute peace officers who use deadly force in the course of protecting our communities.  Supporters of this initiative are using signs, slogans, and language that portrays the initiative as a effort to support law enforcement.

At the Benton County Fair, initiative supporters have a booth with signs stating “Support the Police.” When asked, the signature collectors admit that the sign is false advertising, but states, “it works.”

In Clark County, signature collectors make claims that peace officers do not receive any training first aid, or crisis intervention, which is blatantly false information.

The Washington State Fraternal Order of Police wants to warn the citizens of the state to carefully read and consider any initiative before signing. The current initiative does not support law enforcement but furthers the efforts of special interest groups who solely want to imprison peace officers who are forced to use deadly force in the line of duty.

The Fraternal Order of Police is committed to working diligently with legislators and other stakeholder groups to address the concerns of our communities regarding the use of deadly force by peace officers in Washington State.
